A fall weekend in Vermont – Rain and shine

I’m more than 30 so I’m allowed to enjoy doing nothing during the weekend (I don’t live in New York). A friend asked me if I was interested in going on a getaway in Vermont (I’m just using getaway because I’m not really sure what it means and it sounds fancy) with a few friends. I said yes, because a weekend in Vermont seems close to doing nothing. Unfortunately, a few friends meant 13 other people. It was already too late to back off, plus  I don’t want to be seen as a flake.  I had already  planned to go to a concert on Friday night, so I left Boston around midnight in the rental car with 4 other people (my husband included) and we drove at night. I tried to keep my eyes wide opened, as if they were to pop out of my head, just to be sure that I wouldn’t crash into a moose, as warned by so many signs on the side of the road. Ah quaint New England…

Driving at night is awful, but driving at night if you run into a skunk is a curse. The beast had time to throw its venom on the car. It smelled all weekend long, on and off, without warning us, we would laugh and then smell the skunk “projection” – whatever it is. We got to the big house by the lake by 4am, and since we were the last ones to get there, we got the tiniest room in the lower level. 4 people in the same room. But I kept my cool attitude, the one you need to have when you share a house for 2 days with strangers that you’re trying to become friend with.

Saturday, it was raining, the kind of rain that doesn’t allow any fun walk. We thought it was more romantic and convinced ourself to go on a car trip for the afternoon. We were there for leaf peeping anyway!

I’m amazed by the fact that you can buy pumpkins, leave the money in the box, and nobody is watching. Nobody is stealing. New England almost makes me believe in humanity again.

I wrote a guide about New England, but I don’t want to boss around and say where to go. So I didn’t plan anything, and we ended up driving on okay road. But, the odds were with us when we drove through Weston and its super quaint look.

This pic is for my mother in law who builds every year a whole Fall theme in front of her house.

The country store of Weston is a real paradise for anybody who likes taking Instagram pictures: everything is lame/cute/quirky. I secretly dream of buying for myself a jigsaw puzzle, a flannel hat with fake fur inside, and lobster powder to put in heavy cream, just for it to taste good.  We even saw giant  male underwear.

We tried all the cheddars. We actually tried all the possible samples in the store with almost no shame at all.

In this Christmas boutique, you can buy anything related to Christmas but according to your own taste: hunter, wino, dog lover, or just traditional red and green “stuff to hang on a Christmas tree” (we say balls in French).

Finally, there was some sun on Sunday, and we all agree that it was better than rain. We did some canoe on the lake, hoping that our vest (size: child) could support us in case of a not-fun accident like falling in the cold water.
